The Resident Evil games are heavily characterized by Umbrella’s presence, the classic despicable mastermind corporation, hell-bent on making money at the cost of human lives. Regular everyday stuff, in other words. Despite its long history with the protagonists of the series kicking its butt, Umbrella has changed much since its original debut alongside the first Resident Evil set in the Spencer Mansion. In fact, Umbrella’s logo has been altered from a red to blue color palette, which signifies the company’s change of heart, from evil to good.

That won’t do for our beloved protagonists, however. Whose butts are they going to kick now? Luckily, it turns out that there’s a new mega group of baddies on the prowl, who are likely even worse than Umbrella. Perhaps Leon will make a surprise appearance in Resident Evil: Village and steal the spotlight from Ethan Winters, and he’ll drop some knowledge about The Connections.

5 Who And What Are They?

After the fall of Umbrella in previous Resident Evil titles, just who are the new baddies causing trouble in the new games? Not much is known about this secretive group, other than they are the main culprits for the events that unfold in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. That’s right, it’s not all Jack Baker’s or Eveline’s fault, albeit they are among the scariest monsters in the series.

The Connections is a crime syndicate focused on biochemical research aimed at producing bioweapons. Sounds an awful lot familiar, but unlike Umbrella, this group also deals with gun and trafficking, money laundering, and murder (of course). You might as well regard The Connections as the devil personified.

4 Mia Winters Worked For Them

That’s right, and it’s all explained in Biohazard’s cutscenes supplemented by countless documents, pamphlets, and hidden notes scattered throughout the game. Mia is both Ethan’s wife and a member of The Connections, although she keeps this a secret until she is rescued by her husband during the Dulvey Incident. Some time before her marriage, Mia began working as a researcher for the group in 2010. She stayed in this line of employment for four years, until she became Eveline’s handler.

When tasked with this job, which would be her last for The Connections, she traveled on a tanker with Eveline in tow. Mia had to make sure the child would safely reach a research facility without causing problems and potentially harming the environment due to her affinity with the Mold fungal superorganism. Unfortunately, the duo ran into a hurricane and the tanker washed up on the Baker estate.

3 They Created The Mold Bioweapon

Eveline, also known as they first successful E-type bioweapon, is the result of The Connection’s experiments with a particular fungus capable of growing Mold, a special parasite that infects hosts and allows their behavior to be manipulated. Long story short, Eveline was engineered by this crime syndicate to work in concert with the Mold, and she was the only one capable of using it to basically control people’s minds.

Since Eveline was the product of a lab experiment, she was likely left to her own devices and grew with a complex need for attachment — she wanted a real family. That’s precisely why she infected the Bakers with Mold and turned them into mad serial killers: her voice, constantly influencing their minds, told them to kidnap as many people as possible and bring them “into the family.” The Connections wanted to use Eveline for their own intentions, which was to undoubtedly render other bioweapons useless since mind control is pretty overkill.

2 Lucas Baker Became A Target Because Of Them

Lucas Baker was the only member of the family to survive against Ethan. Unfortunately for him, he couldn’t survive against the series’ beloved Chris Redfield, which makes sense, considering Chris fought and prevailed against more dangerous threats. Lucas was the only Baker not under Eveline’s mind control. He was contacted by The Connections after Eveline reached his home, and was eventually made lead researcher because he could closely monitor her, while continuing to use her Mold ability to experiment on people that he would abduct.

The reformed Blue Umbrella corporation became aware of strange disappearances in Dulvey, and began surveying the Baker estate from a distance, due to strong suspicions that a bioweapon might be located there. They eventually discovered a secret lab in the Abercrombie Salt Mine, where Lucas continued to experiment with Eveline’s samples. Shortly after, Chris was dispatched to apprehend Lucas and impede his efforts to send valuable intel about Eveline to The Connections.

1 Their Goal Is To Take Over The World

Surprise, surprise. Using the E-type bioweapon, The Connections’ goal is to deter other weapons of mass destructions and easily allow a given buyer to take over any area in the world. In other words, their production of children like Eveline would be put on the black market for interested parties.

Maybe they copied Umbrella a bit too much, considering their original business model was to fund a eugenics research by selling the T-virus to the armies around the globe.
