Now that all rumors have been confirmed and the next Resident Evil game is indeed Resident Evil Village, fans can expect Ethan Winters’ story to continue and take place in a brand new location with a whole new set of enemies, survival, and gameplay. As such, Capcom has decided to release a Special Developer Message video to talk a little bit more about the game and what fans can expect once it releases.

As part of the video, producers Peter Fabiano and Tsuyoshi Kanda talked about the game’s graphical engine and how it was optimized for next-generation consoles, as well as Chris Redfield’s appearance – “but not in a way” players think. Additionally, the producers touched upon Resident Evil Village’s game design and how it will utilize the same first-person camera like Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. However, one interesting thing that stood out from that section of the video was the inventory system.

According to the Special Developer Message video, Resident Evil Village’s inventory system will be very similar to that found in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Resident Evil 2 Remake, and Resident Evil 3 Remake. However, the inventory system in those games were more or less inspired by Resident Evil 4; that was the first game in the series to use a grid-like system where items took multiple spots and could be rotated to make room for other items. Due to how popular and recognizable the inventory system was in that game, Capcom decided to use it in other games, including the upcoming Resident Evil Village.

At one point in the video, fans can see the inventory in full display (which also incorporates a suitcase-like design found in Resident Evil 4). Part of the inventory, a handgun, ammunition, a knife, and a healing kit can be seen – each item taking up a certain part of the grid. As players progress through the game and discover more items and weapons, they will have to manage their inventory in such a way that will allow them to carry important items at once, just like in Resident Evil 4.

One interesting analysis that fans immediately drew (after seeing how the inventory is similar to that of Resident Evil 4) is that Capcom is experimenting with the system for Resident Evil 4 Remake too. After all, as previously stated, the two games have an almost-identical inventory up to the point that it resembles a suitcase, or even an attaché. Because of that, the possibility of Resident Evil 4 Remake seems to be more of a reality.

Resident Evil Village comes out sometime in 2021 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
