Resident Evil 7 was easily one of the most intense games of 2017. The game was praised for matching an eerie atmosphere with tense gameplay and some of the most disturbing imagery ever featured in a video game. But modders have taken things one step further, bringing the game to dizzying new heights of horror. They’ve replaced all of the characters in the game with characters from the hit TV show, Family Guy.
Without spoiling anything, the plot of Resident Evil 7 revolves around being trapped in a house with a psychotic family. One clever modder realized that another psychotic family is the Griffins. The weird mix of violence, randomness, and sophomoric humor that the Griffins spout actually fits quite well into the Resident Evil universe.
Gameplay of the mod was uploaded to Youtube by the popular content creator ToastedShoes. His video starts off with a monster that’s been replaced with Quagmire, who is pretty evil in his own right. Quagmire, who is suspended in goo, slowly pulls himself off the wall. The mod has imported dialog from the show, and hearing Quagmire’s iconic “giggity-giggity” line as he tries to murder the player adds a few extra layers to the horror.
Other characters from the show make appearances as well, as the Baker family has been entirely replaced by the Griffin family. There’s something very disconcerting about sitting at a table in the grossest kitchen ever, with a cartoon family that most people know from a comedy TV show. And the way that the models of the characters are not quite right actually adds to the creepiness of the game, adding a touch of the uncanny valley to Resident Evil’s already terrifying jump scares.
Another scene involves the Meg, the daughter in Family Guy, repeatedly stabbing the main character with a knife, before cutting off his hand with a chainsaw. On the one hand, it’s so absurd that it’s pretty funny. But on the other hand, the dead, unblinking eyes of Meg’s character model are probably going to haunt one’s nightmares. While she, unfortunately, isn’t canonical, if she were, she’d easily one of the all-time scariest monsters in the Resident Evil Series.
Gamers who are feeling brave can either download the mod and experience the horror for themselves, while those who are feeling less brave can watch Toasted shoe’s video. The rest can boot up Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and try and forget that this monstrosity exists.
Resident Evil 7 is available now for PC, PS4, PlayStation VR, and Xbox One.
