Since the first Resident Evil game, fans have been curious about what happened to their favorite characters after the Spencer Mansion incident. While most of the characters have starred in following Resident Evil sequels like Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, other characters, such as Rebecca Chambers and Barry Burton, haven’t been in the spotlight as much.

However, in recent years, Barry has been getting the attention he deserves. He starred in a couple of spin-off games and even had a comic book story dedicated to him. Both Resident Evil: Revelations 2 and the comic book explore what happened to Barry Burton after the Spencer Mansion.

6 Dealing With The Aftermath

After the events of the first game, the S.T.A.R.S. unit was disbanded, leaving Barry alone to deal with his trauma. His zombie-killing experience left him psychologically damaged, which led him to seek psychiatric help. As he walks into a psychiatrist’s office, he notices someone shambling around like a zombie. He shakes it off, telling himself that it was just his imagination.

The comic book story “Lock Down” by Kris Oprisko explores the psychological effects the Spencer Mansion incident had on Barry Burton. The story also shows how he dealt with his trauma, something the games don’t have time to explore. This is a great self-contained plot for the character, and it allows fans to view what happened to Barry directly following the first Resident Evil.

5 Containing An Outbreak

Later in the same story, Barry’s doctor, Peter Lengle, is called away before his appointment with the former S.T.A.R.S. officer. Barry overhears the doctor say that the test subjects have escaped containment, which leaves Barry curious and confused. His confusion doesn’t last long as a zombie attacks Dr. Lengle right outside his office. Horrified, Barry runs to kill the zombie only to find the building overrun by the undead.

Barry attempts to contain the outbreak by sealing everyone inside the building. While it is heroic that he tries to prevent a city-wide incident, anyone who’s played Resident Evil 2 and 3 knows that Barry’s efforts are futile. This is still a great moment for Barry, though, as he pushes past his PTSD to save the rest of the city. Poor Barry. Only a week after escaping the mansion, he’s dealing with zombies again.

4 Fighting A Tyrant

While thinking of a plan to contain the outbreak, Barry stumbles across a dying man who tells him to set up a bomb in a facility underneath the building. The bomb was used as a contingency in case there was a containment breach. Barry uses Lengle’s key card to enter the seemingly empty facility. He quickly discovers he is not alone as he encounters a Tyrant who tries to kill him. Luckily, Barry finds a nearby emergency ax and dismembers the Tyrant’s arm.

As the Tyrant recovers, Barry attempts to make his escape with the bomb components. However, the Tyrant grabs him and almost kills him. Thankfully, due to a well-placed vial of acid, Barry can defend himself. As the Tyrant screams in agony, Barry escapes. He is extremely lucky throughout the story as he narrowly escapes the exploding facility. Going up against a Tyrant one-on-one isn’t something most Resident Evil characters have done, which makes this moment even better.

3 Rescuing Jill

In the original version of Resident Evil 3, there is a secret alternate ending where Barry rescues Jill and Carlos. As they fly away from Raccoon City, Jill thanks the helicopter pilot, who then reveals himself to be Barry Burton. Jill is as shocked as the player, but given the events in the comic, it now makes sense how he was there to save the day.

While it isn’t shown if Barry went looking for Jill right after he escaped the facility, the timeline matches up for Barry to save Jill. Unfortunately, this wholesome reunion is not in the remake of Resident Evil 3, but it is nice to know Barry will be there for his friend.

2 Turned Down BSAA Before Joining

After the dissolution of S.T.A.R.S., former agents went to join the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance or the BSAA. Characters like Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield, and Rebecca Chambers all became members of the BSAA. But not Barry. In fact, Barry retired temporarily to focus on and spend time with his family.

When word of Jill’s alleged death in 2006 spread, Barry was distraught but remained vigilant as he believed her to be alive. While he was ecstatic to find out she was alive, she and Chris tried to get him to join the BSAA once again when all three of them were together following the events of Resident Evil 5. Eventually, he gave in and joined the BSAA as a combat specialist. At the start of Resident Evil: Revelations 2, he is a full-fledged member of the BSAA.

1 The Sejm Island Incident

Finally, fans get caught up with Barry’s story during Resident Evil: Revelations 2. The game begins with Claire and Barry’s daughter, Moira, captured by mysterious armed assailants. Claire and Moira manage to escape captivity and almost escape the island together. However, Moira is left behind, presumed dead.

Barry then takes it upon himself to travel to Sejm Island to find his daughter. Along the way, he meets Natalia Korda. They both fight Alex Wesker with the help of Claire and Moira. Even when he is an agent trying to save the world, Barry manages to find the time for his friends and family.
