Leon S. Kennedy has gone through hell and back and returned for more. He’s proven his worth as a fighter through several Resident Evil titles, earning him fan praise and admiration for his cool, collected demeanor and deadly combat skills.
He’s faced down every horror imaginable, but what about protagonists from other game franchises? It’s one thing to deal with the unexpected, but it’s quite another to take down adversaries who prove to be more than a match. Here’s 5 video game characters that could give Leon a serious run for his money, and 5 that probably wouldn’t stand a chance against him.
10 Win: Solid Snake
Snake has gone up against some of the toughest badasses around, and he’s even stared down the maw of the terrifying Metal Gear Rex. He’s a force to be reckoned with, and his super-soldier genetic conditioning makes him ruthless on the battlefield.
For all of Leon’s skill and wit, Snake could turn the tables on him without much worry. A mixture of stealth approach and CQC attacks could overwhelm Leon’s deadly accuracy, leaving him wide open to a killing blow.
9 Lose: Alan Wake
Flashlights and basic gun skills won’t do much to deter Leon from a fight, but that’s pretty much what Alan Wake has to work with. The most hardship he’s ever faced is two years worth of writer’s block - not exactly tough-guy material.
While Alan is capable of holding his own against one or two supernatural forces, he’d be no match for Leon’s strength and combat skills which have been honed in fights including everything from zombies to horrific parasites.
8 Win: Joanna Dark
Perfect Dark’s Joanna is a full-on undercover espionage agent with seriously top-notch combat skills. She’s been in the business for years, and her track record for successful missions is flawless.
Leon might be able to get a few hits in, but it’s doubtful he’d last long against Joanna’s pinpoint accuracy with a gun, not to mention her up close fighting skills. She can also take a lethal hit, and keep on ticking in order to complete her task.
7 Lose: Marcus Fenix
Gears Of War’s Marcus Fenix is a tried and tested soldier who has faced down scores of Locust forces, but without the benefit of a team to fall back on, his combat prowess is significantly reduced. He’s also used to firing from cover, while Leon is more of a one-hit-kill kind of guy.
Despite their size difference, it’s doubtful Fenix could overwhelm Leon long enough to land a fatal blow. Leon is faster, more nimble, and his D.S.O. spec-ops training and near-superhuman conditioning make him tough to take down.
6 Win: Sam Fisher
Both Leon and Splinter Cell’s Sam Fisher are no strangers to counter-terrorism techniques and training, but the latter is a master at it. Fisher is a one-man infiltration unit that can single-handedly take out an entire contingent of troops without anyone being the wiser.
Against Leon, Sam Fisher would no doubt employ subterfuge and stealth in order to get the drop on his opponent. This could involve a silent headshot from behind, or dropping from a high perch without Leon suspecting it.
5 Lose: Soap MacTavish
Call of Duty’s Soap MacTavish has been a fan favorite ever since the original Modern Warfare dropped in 2007, and although he checked out in the third installment, he’s no less a badass for it.
Unfortunately, MacTavish is a soldier who practices the rudiments and drills, and therefore lacks Leon’s ingenuity and ability to employ unorthodox battlefield strategies. While MacTavish would play it by the book, Leon would take advantage of that, and probably kill him with ease.
4 Win: Gordon Freeman
Half-Life’s reluctant hero Gordon Freeman has had his mettle tested more than once, and lived to tell the tale. This everyday guy managed to face down interdimensional horrors and an oppressive alien race, and still emerge unscathed.
His Hazard Suit may have something to do with it, but it’s far more likely that Freeman’s combat skills are instinctual. He’s good at what he does, whether it’s with a crowbar, or a gravity gun. Considering what he’s faced down, it’s easy to surmise that he’d win a pitched battle against Leon S. Kennedy.
3 Lose: Max Payne
Max Payne is too distraught and unfocused to really go the distance with Leon, which would end up costing him his life. At the end of the day, Max is a good shot, but that’s about it. Bullet time won’t save him from Leon’s superior training.
It’s essentially beat cop vs. highly trained special ops soldier, which is hardly a fair fight. Max scrapes through each fight by the skin of his teeth, whereas Leon welcomes all challengers.
2 Win: Karl Fairburne
Sniper Elite’s Karl is a one-man wrecking crew that strikes fear into the heart of the Third Reich. Imagine taking him out of his time and pitting him against Leon S. Kennedy in the modern age. With nothing but an M1 Carbine, Karl could quickly gain the upper hand.
His superior sniper skills and stealth training would be an effective counter against Leon’s all-around enhanced battle prowess. He’s also clearly the more patient of the two combatants, and could simply wait in the tall grass for the perfect headshot.
1 Lose: Lara Croft
For this battle, Leon would go up against nu-Lara Croft, rather than the unstoppable tank from the original Tomb Raider. This version of Lara is a survivalist, first and foremost. She’s able to deal with the elements and the environment and turn them to her advantage, but that’s not enough to win the fight.
Lara must rely on cunning to overwhelm regular soldiers, but against an enhanced expert like Leon, she’d quickly be outclassed. The fight would descend quickly into a gunfire battle where she would be able to defend herself adequately enough, but if the confrontation ever went close-quarters, it’d be lights out for Lara.
