The remake of Resident Evil 3 has largely been a success and many fans of the game have seen it as an improvement on the original game that was released in 1999. Despite not receiving the critical acclaim of the Resident Evil 2 remake, the third entry has pleased plenty of players, and there is now a mod in the game that allows players to experience what a remake of another retro classic would be like.
The Resident Evil franchise helped define the survival-horror genre, yet there were other franchises at the turn of the century following in similar explorations of the genre. Dino Crisis utilized survival-horror mechanics while using a grounding which could be compared to the Jurassic Park franchise. This melding of inspirations led to an impressive fan base, who have been keen to get a remake after the last release from the series seventeen years ago. Fortunately for fans, there is now a mod on Resident Evil 3 which will allow them to experience something like a remaster of the game for a short while.
YouTuber, Darkness Valtier, revealed a mod test which changes Resident Evil 3 into a Dino Crisis-esque game, aptly named Dino Evil 3. The mod turns all enemies into T-Rexes, which are the same height as the original enemies, and Jill now looks like Regina who is the central character from Dino Crisis. The mod will excite many fans who are uncertain about the developer Capcom’s commitment to a remake of Dino Crisis, but the mod does not work seamlessly. Dinosaurs will get stuck in doorways and they aren’t completely realistic in their appearance. Nevertheless, this will be a fun adventure for those who have completed Resident Evil 3’s short playtime.
There are already some concerns about Resident Evil 3 not having any additional downloadable content, so fan-made mods like this one may be a good way to draw out more gameplay from the title. On the other hand, fans of Dino Crisis will be hoping that the positive reaction to mods like this one encourages Capcom to consider making a new title or remaking an existing game from the Dino Crisis series. It will be interesting to see what Capcom announce as its next project, but it is clear that fans would like more remakes.
There are rumors that Capcom is beginning to work on a remake of Resident Evil 4, but this is yet to be confirmed and many players will be hoping for news on the Dino Crisis franchise in the future. In the meantime, players can enjoy this mod while they wait for definitive news on the series.
Resident Evil 3 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
