Sunday, January 21 marks the 20 year anniversary of Resident Evil 2’s launch, and with a full-scale remake having been in development for years, fans are expecting something special. Whether or not anything is announced on the game’s 20th anniversary is still up in the air, but Capcom itself has started teasing fans with a cryptic new image on Twitter.
At first glance, the image appears to be nothing out of the ordinary. However, closer inspection reveals some hidden details that have fueled speculation about a possible Resident Evil 2 remake announcement coming soon. For example, the object in the bottom left-hand corner of the image appears to be a typewriter, which is what players used to save their game in Resident Evil 2 and many of the older Resident Evil titles.
Something else of note in the image is the dummy finger sitting on the windowsill. As some may recall, the dummy finger was an object that players could find in the Resident Evil 7 demo that seemingly served no purpose. Capcom could be including the dummy finger in the image just to tease players, or it could be an indication that a different kind of Resident Evil announcement is coming - something unrelated to Resident Evil 2.
The dummy finger could be an indication that Capcom is planning on announcing something related to Resident Evil 7 instead of the Resident Evil 2 remake. One possibility that comes to mind is that Resident Evil 7 is getting ported to the Nintendo Switch, which would make sense considering Capcom’s intention to increase Switch support.
If the announcement is related to Resident Evil 7 instead of Resident Evil 2, another possibility is that Capcom has even more DLC planned for the game. Just last month, Capcom released what was meant to be the final DLC packs for Resident Evil 7, the Not A Hero expansion starring Chris Redfield and the End of Zoe epilogue, but perhaps the company has been inspired to develop more post-release content for the game.
Whatever Capcom is announcing is a mystery at this point in time, but the company does seem to be gearing up for a Resident Evil-related announcement of some sort. After all, Capcom recently updated the Resident Evil social media logos, and has created placeholder space on its websites for a new game. Whether or not that new game is the Resident Evil 2 remake, a Resident Evil 7 Switch port, or something else entirely remains to be seen, but hopefully fans don’t have to wait too much longer to find out.
The Resident Evil 2 remake is in development for unspecified consoles.
