Half a month ago, Capcom released the remake of the 1998 classic survival-horror title, Resident Evil 2. After the game hit shelves worldwide back in late January, the remake was received with overwhelmingly positive reviews and it managed to ship a whopping 3 million units in its first week.

While some people have already achieved the highest rank possible in the game, some fans looking for a more challenging playthrough took matters into their own hands and added mods to make the remake all the more terrifying. In a video posted by YouTuber BeastGamingHD, the streamer showcased a mod named “Ghost of Sherry” that replaces the character model of Mr. X, with a headless Sherry Birkin.

What makes “Ghost of Sherry” terrifying lies under the element of surprise. Unlike the base game’s Mr. X who lets out loud footsteps to indicate its presence, the Sherry mod is completely silent. Now imagine walking through the dark halls of the RPD, shooting zombies and carefully dodging lickers, and upon looking behind, you come face-to-face with the creepy headless form of Sherry.

If that thought is not blood-curdling enough, it is worth knowing that nothing in the player’s arsenal of weapons can stun or damage Sherry, given that bullets run straight through her. Of course, surviving the relentless pursuit of the revamped Mr. X in the base game is already nerve-racking in itself. But being stalked by an unstoppable headless ghost of a child, that can creep up on the player at any given moment, makes Mr. X an easier foe to face for the faint of heart.

“Ghost of Sherry” isn’t the first mod that BeastGamingHD has introduced in Resident Evil 2 remake. Recently, the streamer also showcased another mod that replaced Mr. X with Resident Evil 3’s Nemesis. Although the mod only swapped Mr. X with its later form known as super tyrant, the audio cues that plays the soundtrack from RE3, together with the monster’s famous “S.T.A.R.S.” line, cleverly simulates what players can expect if Capcom grants the request of most fans and remakes the third installment in the Resident Evil series.

All things considered, it seems that the recent proliferation of Resident Evil 2 mods is only the first wave of fan-made content to hit the 2019 remake. Currently, several mods are already in development such as this attempt to introduce fixed camera angles in the game. To the uninitiated, the classic-era of Resident Evil games were defined by a fixed camera perspective coupled with tank controls, adding its own way to induce fear given that the player cannot see what lies behind every corner.

Resident Evil 2 is available now for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
