Resident Evil is by far one of the most well-known franchises in both gaming and movies. Its success allowed for the creation of the incredible amount of great games, bad movies, and cameos that this franchise has. Resident Evil now has eight numbered games, several spin-offs, and its characters have even appeared in fighting games.
But just like anything that is too popular, not everybody is fond of it. There are also those who really like some of the games but hate others. Of course, different people will have different takes on a popular franchise, and Reddit is a great place to find all kinds of opinions about the Resident Evil games.
10 The Best Resident Evil Is The First One
Although Resident Evil 2 was the most famous game of the series for a long time, not everybody agrees that it is the best of the franchise. Even though Resident Evil 2 and its remake are undeniably good and popular games according to both gamers and critics, there are those who disagree that it was the pinnacle of the series. Reddit user Mayflex says that the first Resident Evil is the best of the franchise because “mansion is a bigger and more interesting location than the police station. The progression and puzzles in RE2 were far more linear and I think resident evil 1s story is more mysterious and simplistic.”
9 Resident Evil: Revelations 2 Is Mediocre
Although die-hard fans of Resident Evil might think that most, if not all, games of the franchise are great, there are those who strongly disagree. In fact, it’s not very unusual to see those who complain about Resident Evil 5 or 7.
But when it comes to Resident Evil: Revelations 2, u/Xytan_ calls it a mediocre game in every aspect apart from its story, and goes on to say that it is “a poor man’s The Last Of Us clone wearing a Resident Evil skin.”
8 Ashley Is Not That Bad
Most Resident Evil 4 players complained at least once about Ashley Graham’s behavior in the game. There are people who still argue about who, between Ashley and Sheva, has the worst A.I. in the franchise.
Seems that u/Fuuton_Rasenshuriken does not think that her A.I. was so bad to deal with. In fact, he says that those who had problems with her did not really know how to play the game. He even says that “as long as you play correctly. Her AI is mostly spot-on.”
7 Resident Evil 6 Is A Good Game
As any franchise that has too many games, Resident Evil also has the ones that most fans do not like. Resident Evil 6 is a very controversial game that not everybody is into. Actually, it is quite unusual to find people who like the game.
It so happens that Reddit user u/CheeseStud is one of them. Not only he says that Resident Evil is a good experience, he makes sure to point out that he also finds it a really good Resident Evil game.
6 If You Do Not Enjoy Outbreak, You Do Not Understand Resident Evil
Many different people play Resident Evil games. Obviously, they like the franchise for different reasons. Fans of the action most likely prefer games like Resident Evil 4. Meanwhile, the focus on action is one of the things that fans of the classic games dislike.
When it comes to Resident Evil: Outbreak, there are not many people who liked it, but u/PL_Thundah believes that this game is a perfect representation of the franchise’s essence. In his own words, “It should be hard. It should be hopeless. It was for the 100,000 people who died there.”
5 Resident Evil 5 Is A Great Game
Seems that even when most think there’s a consensus about how bad a game is, there is always somebody who enjoys it. Resident Evil 5 was heavily criticized by players. The co-op nature, Sheva’s A.I., the lack of classic zombies, and many other things prevented fans from really liking the game.
But not all of them. Reddit user u/Thats_My_Purse15 seems to have really liked Resident Evil 5. To this Reddit user, “Resident Evil 5 is better than most give it credit for and while 6 may be the worst in the series, it’s not a horrible game in the slightest.”
4 Resident Evil 7 Is Overrated
Generally speaking, there were a lot of fans who did not like how Resident Evil 7 was a very different game from what fans of the franchise are used to. It was a first-person game that barely resembles the war on bioterrorism that was a part of the plot throughout the whole franchise. Even then, it was a critically acclaimed game that was well-received by most gamers and fans.
The game did not work for everybody, though. Reddit user u/HunterTheHoly is not one of those fans who really liked the game. In fact, he has a whole wall text of arguments about why Resident Evil is an overrated game.
3 Resident Evil 4 Is Not A Good Resident Evil Game
When Resident Evil 4 came along, it was clearly different from the older games of the franchise. There’s no way to deny that, in that game, Leon S. Kennedy is the protagonist of an action-adventure with horror elements. And this is just one of things that made little sense in the game.
Although it is still one of the best Resident Evil games for most people, there are those who clearly disliked it for a number of reasons. For Reddit user u/Umbrella_BOW, the game was not a good Resident Evil Experience.
2 Resident Evil Is Dead
For many years, fans thought that Resident Evil 4 killed the series, but there are others who think the lore itself killed the franchise. That’s the interesting take that Reddit user u/TheNYIslanders has about the games.
In his opinion, the characters are too old now for most players to be able to relate to. Not only that, they are all way too skilled to be protagonists of horror games. Another argument of his is regarding the lore and how it has only gotten worse.
1 Resident Evil Was Always Action Oriented
A very common criticism that Resident Evil constantly gets from the fans is that the games became too action-oriented. This trend clearly started in Resident Evil 4, where Leon S. Kennedy kills hundreds of infected villagers before the game ends.
According to u/dmjr333, this has always been a characteristic of the series. In his own words: “RE games (even the ones before 4) still had more action than your typical horror game. Don’t take that as a bad thing.”
