According to VGC, Sony is reportedly shutting down original game development at Japan Studio, the company’s oldest first-party developer. The studio, which has produced Ape Escape, Gravity Rush and Knack, has laid off most of its developers after their annual contracts lapsed. Japan Studio will maintain its localization and business staff, while the ASOBI Team, which develops the Astro Bot games, will remain as a standalone studio within Sony Japan. It is unclear if the changes have affected the studio’s External Development Department, which produced last year’s Demon’s Souls....

Since Sony first took a step into the mobile gaming market with the PlayStation Portable, fans of gaming and handheld devices have been wondering: when would the company finally get around to bringing both cell phones and portable games together? Finally, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play was officially revealed to be, at least on the surface, the answer to fans’ demands. Spellbreak, the free-to-play magical Battle Royale, released early this month. Developed by indie studio Proletariat, the game puts a magical spin on the Battle Royale genre. Players drop into Spellbreak’s arena with arcane gauntlets at their command, which they can use to generate different elemental spells. Combining magical elements leads to new and powerful effects, and players will be able to acquire new gauntlets in the arena. Like most free-to-play games, Spellbreak will generate revenue through micro-transactions....

Ascension has arrived in Apex Legends. With it comes a new Legend, a new map, a new vehicle, and a brand new Battle Pass that has been overhauled to be easier to understand, but also way more grindy than the previous Battle Pass. So grindy, in fact, that Apex Legends are calling out Respawn’s cash grab. The new Battle Pass has 110 tiers, with each tier requiring 10 stars to complete....

Since news of Sir Sean Connery’s passing shook the world this weekend, many who knew the Scottish actor intimately or in passing are sharing their anecdotes. And few have been as colorful as that of screenwriter Brian Koppelman (Runaway Jury, Ocean’s Thirteen), who took to Twitter to recall the time he and collaborator David Levien had a raucous working relationship with Sean Connery on a nondescript film. In Koppelman’s telling, the pair were hired to rewrite a script, which was then ordered to be rewritten again to Connery’s specifications after he boarded the project....

The match-three mobile game SEGA Heroes will be officially shutting down on May 21 following the separation of SEGA and the game’s developer Demiurge. The puzzle title brought together characters from various games across SEGA’s 60-year history. While the two entities agreed to separate in such a way that Demiurge could assume full ownership of the studio, it will lose the right to work with SEGA characters from series like Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Monkey Ball, and Yakuza....

About a couple of weeks ago, From Software declared that its forthcoming action-RPG Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice could provide potential players with a “more challenging” experience than any of the previous games in the developer’s stable of releases. Now, the project’s director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, has even gone so far to state that the studio’s new game set in late-1500s Japan will be so demanding that players “will die a lot” while taking on the title....
