Another virtual edition of Sci-Fi Explosion will bring you real-life fun and prizes this week! Boo! Now that we’ve got your attention, it’s time for a huge announcement. Overkill’s The Walking Dead has been canceled by Skybound Entertainment. Skybound, which owns the rights to The Walking Dead franchise, has announced that it has terminated its contract with Starbreeze Studios and that all work on Overkill’s The Walking Dead will come to an immediate halt. The game was designed to grow over time via regular content episodes, but it was hardly impressive following a launch on PC last year. Starbreeze reported that it would take up a cost-cutting drive following the disappointing launch and the game’s lower-than-expected sales, ultimately firing CEO Bo Andersson, with reports claiming that it was over $45 million in debt....

Bethesda’s fantasy RPG The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim takes players into a world of epic stories and mythical creatures. The main character, a Dragonborn, will perform countless quests for various NPCs throughout the game. Typical cliches in the genre include things like saving the world, dark villains with complex motives to rule/destroy the world, silent protagonists, tropey characters, and so on. Although Grand Theft Auto 6’s development seems to have hit a delay due to Rockstar Games having unexpectedly encountered an extended lifespan and continued sales of GTA 5 and GTA Online, it doesn’t mean that fans aren’t looking forward to the next numbered entry in the series. Heists have become a major facet of Grand Theft Auto Online over the years, with Rockstar Games continually looking for ways to up the stakes. Through official events, in-game announcements, and new scenery found in the game’s open world, it appears that Rockstar is preparing to launch a brand-new heist for players to take part in, and it may be coming as soon as next week. Deadpool and Free Guy star Ryan Reynolds has announced he’ll be launching a new diversity initiative with one of his next films. Earlier this year, it was reported that Ryan Reynolds has signed on to star in an untitled time-travel thriller directed by Shawn Levy. The project was originally penned by T. S. Nowlin as a spec script under the titled Our Name is Adam with Tom Cruise briefly attached to star....

For as zany and tongue-in-cheek as the Saints Row series may be, fans are pretty divided in their opinions on it. Many liked the more serious style that the first two titles had, almost emulating Grand Theft Auto with its mob-story antics and focus on grittier crimes. Others feel that the series didn’t become interesting until Saints Row: The Third, completely jumping the shark and going all-in on absurdity and comedy....

Scream 6 (or whatever it may be titled) is officially happening. This is hardly a surprise after the fifth Scream film, confusingly titled just Scream, surpassed all pandemic and January expectations by opening to $33.9 million over MLK Day weekend. Still, it was nice to get a confirmation Thursday that the sixth entry is greenlit and moving ahead with Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet returning to direct, and James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick once again writing the screenplay....

The elevator pitch I’ve heard for Second Extinction is “Left 4 Dead with dinosaurs.” While I think the game shares more in common with open-arena games like The Cycle than it does with L4D, there’s something to be said about mindlessly tearing through never-ending waves of bodies as you push forward from objective to objective. At the end of each 20-40 minute round of Second Extinction, the entire squad will be covered from head to toe in the slick red blood of your fallen dino enemies....

Elden Ring is a bit of a puzzle. Not only has the game been practically missing since its reveal back in 2019, but it has maintained a strong community and fanbase. Much of this can be contributed to From Software’s pedigree, but still: having a game announcement followed by a complete abandonment of any substantive sort of news cycle or marketing is peculiar, especially for an effectively new IP like Elden Ring....
